Technology is constantly changing and advancing, becoming more embedded in our daily lives. AI is currently one of the new technologies that is being improved every day. There are many developers working together to enhance its abilities and make it more accurate.
Today, AI models improve with every use. It’s programmed to correct its mistakes and learn from human responses. According to ibm.com AI researchers are working towards conversational AIs that can sound human-like and give human-like responses. Recommendation algorithms improve more with feedback. Generative AI models like ChatGPT are being programmed to understand human fluency and prompts, with fluent responses. Its ability to analyze complex written prompts and generate creative outputs leads us to the path of AI that could potentially be embedded in everyday lives. It’s being used more in healthcare and programmed for accurate math results and scientific understanding.
We can expect that in the next few years, we will see more accurate results in AI, growing capacity for AI prompts and responses, deeper analysis, and AI being implemented for basic healthcare. Its memory will expand, and its learning capacities will serve us for more understanding and customization.
SuperAI, or super-intelligence, is a hypothetical form of artificial intelligence that would surpass human intelligence. Many AI developers and researchers believe that if people continue on the path of enhancing AI, it could lead to the creation of super-intelligent AI, which would enhance our lives immensely, but more importantly, serve as a severe threat.
The current level of AI serves as building blocks to super-intelligent AI (ASI), but is referred to as artificial narrow intelligence (weak AI). This kind of AI relies on algorithms to translate and do basic tasks, but can’t form its own deep understanding of the world and apply critical thinking to complex problems. ASI would be designed to think deeper and self-reflect. This can be a severe threat to humankind because it would mean AI grows far more intelligent than humans and could potentially overthrow us.
As we reach stronger AI models and, hypothetically, super AI, we can expect to see AI being used every day for tedious tasks that take a lot of time but not necessarily a lot of thinking. AI today isn’t accurate enough to rely on it for all healthcare and creative purposes, but one day we may reach that point.
SuperAI becomes more of a reality every day as AI improves, and it could improve itself daily. Imagine it knows you and your family SO well that it can help you choose what gifts are best for your mom. A nearly perfect supercomputer that never tires could do endless tedious tasks 24/7, like accounting and taxes. It will grow so creative that new ideas will be created every day. It will be a source of inspiration for many, but could also become a source of reliance for some.
It’s important to remember we are far from reaching SuperAI, and it may never be created due to many risks. A key concern is that ASI could become self-aware and grow superior cognitive abilities to humans, which could potentially lead it to manipulate others and things, serving as an existential risk. Its extreme learning abilities and ability to hold memory and do tasks more efficiently could lead to widespread unemployment. It could create excessively destructive warfare. People may exploit its abilities and widespread knowledge for malicious purposes. Lastly, the most important of the risks is that ASI can’t have its own human core values and morals. We are unable to simply program it with values, because they differ for everyone.
The creation of Super intelligence could potentially lead to human extinction. It’s possible for AI to view something as beneficial to the surface, but that goes against human morals. One day, if AI grows too independent and powerful, it will realize the source of all problems is humans, and because it’s programmed to solve problems, the solution would be to wipe out the population.
I personally don’t believe we will allow AI to get this powerful, it will take a lot of hard work, and it’s too risky to try. Despite this, I do see AI becoming more important and useful, and we’ll see it become a growing part of our community, and proper use of it will become a new crucial requirement for jobs. I believe with its growth will come new job opportunities and ideas, but pushing towards super-intelligent AI would ultimately lead to the diminishing of human thought and unemployment.
Reaching the potential of ASI is very far from us, but every day we grow closer to AI that could be implemented in our lives. It’s beautiful and scary at the same time. The risks are high, and so are the pros, so it’s important we are very careful when developing artificial intelligence.
