February is always a month to look forward to. Whether it’s Valentines day excitement, or the start of spring sports season. But for fans of Indie music, this month holds a lot more exciting dates. Popular Indie artist Mitski has teased a new album for February 27th, with 2 songs pre-releasing from the new album. And so far? This looks like another incredible album from her.
The songs she’s released early so far are “Where’s My Phone?” and “I’ll Change For You”. These two songs are a great preview into what the album is going to sound like, and fans are already super excited. For this new album, “Nothing’s Going to Happen to Me,” she’s gone back to the style of song she had in 2014-2018, with albums like “Bury Me at Makeout Creek”, “Puberty 2”, and “Be The Cowboy,” which kickstarted her career in music. With a return of the heavy electric guitar/bass usage and older vocal style, it’s definitely exciting and nostalgic for fans to hear her music like this again. In 2023, Mitski had the release of “The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We” in late February of that year. This album was immensely popular, but was a large jump from her normal style, which left some fans let down. Her new music was more upbeat in tone and subject, along with her lyrics and background sounds being lighter, which some fans didn’t like. Mitski is often characterized as a “sad” artist, but this album proved that she can have much more diversity than sad or somber music. But, with the potential for “Nothing’s Going to Happen to Me,” she will no doubt make older and newer fans happy with the return of her grungier style.
In order to gauge my own opinion of the exciting new album, I gave her two prereleased songs a listen. I really liked “Where’s My Phone?” because it was reminiscent of her older works, and gave me a really nostalgic feel. While I do love her newer songs, I personally prefer her older albums, and I’m really excited for the return of the same style. The song “I’ll Change For You” was also incredibly good, and had a less exciting beat compared to “Where’s My Phone?” but stands out nonetheless. Similar to her past sadder songs, she uses her incredible vocal range and musical talent to give the song a very desperate and almost longing feel, which I thought made for a very deep hitting song. As the dates draw closer to the release of the album, the excitement is continuing to build, with teasers for music videos, and even a release of tour dates. Overall, I’m positive her new works will be exactly what fans have been craving, and will hopefully gather more fans to her music.
With these things in mind, keep your eye out for the release of “Nothing’s About To Happen to Me” on the 27th, so you can give it a listen, and truly hear what amazing songs Mitski has freshly made, and maybe even become well-versed in her discography after the hit that this album will no doubt be.
