Netflix released a new hit show called “Finding Her Edge.” The show aired on Jan. 22 and is based on the book written by Jennifer Lacopelli. The show stars Madelyn Keys as Adriana Russo, Cale Ambrozic as Brayden Elliot, and Olly Atkins as Freddie O’Connell. Throughout this article there are spoilers, so be cautious if you want to watch the show.
The story starts with Adriana Russo and her family’s very famous ice skating rink, Russo Rink. Her parents, Sarah and Will Russo, are Olympic gold medalists, so this automatically put Adriana and her two sisters, older sister Elise Russo and younger sister Maria Russo, straight into ice skating. Tragically Sarah Russo, the Russo mom, dies two years before the show’s plot starts. This is a huge part of the whole plot. Her death is when everything broke, Russo Rink started suffering financially, Elise started being pressured more than ever by her dad to be the best single ice dancer in the competition, and Adriana quit skating to be the “manager” of Russo Rink, which lead her to dropping Freddie O’Connel as her ice dance partner after many years together. Freddie and Adriana have a very emotionally strong past together. He was her first love and they were inseparable and unstoppable on the ice. But when she dropped him, everything shattered.
In the first season of “Finding Her Edge,” there are plot twists, shocks, love, hate and more that makes this series so good. Adriana goes back to ice dance, skating with a new partner Brayden Elliot, the “bad boy” of figure skating. This has her torn because Freddie is now living with Adriana, along with many other ice dancers for the skating season. Freddie also has a new ice dance partner, Riley Monroe. This makes tensions high. There are friendships, but also rivalries between the two pairs, that makes the show such an exciting ride.
Adriana and Brayden have chemistry like no other. The way they skate together on the ice makes you feel their passion through the screen. The two actors, Ambrozic and Keys, portray these characters very well. In the beginning their partnership is rough. Since Adriana hasn’t been on the ice competitively in over two years and Brayden is “the cockiest person she has ever met,” it makes it hard for the two to skate together in the beginning. But once the pair gets to really know each other and build a connection there is a switch.
After Brayden and Adriana have a little steamy moment at a party, things twist. The press immediately found out about this, which led to Adriana and Brayden deciding to act as if they are a real couple so the fans will support them more. Everyone loves the ‘Hottest Couple On Ice’ “Bradrianna.” After competing at the National Qualifiers they travel to compete at Worlds in Paris, France and that’s when everything changes.
Adriana and Brayden are still ‘pretending’ to be a couple but both know there are feelings no matter how deep they are buried. Which is exactly why Brayden is so shocked to find Adriana kissing Freddie on the carousel the night before Worlds. This creates tension between Brayden and Adriana causing Brayden to lash out and threaten to never skate with her again. Right before going on the ice, Bryaden realizes he loves Adriana and begs her to leave Freddie, she rejects him. They both push down their feelings for one last final skate and end up winning Worlds. Right after the competition Brayden leaves her. Adriana and Freddie start to date and they decide to be partners again for the next ice dance competition season.
In the last two minutes of the show, Adriana and Freddie go to practice, when they see Brayden and Riley warming up. Leaving a massive plot twist and cliff hanger for season two.
From tragic accidents to the tricky love triangle, we fell absolutely in love with the show, although we disagree with the ending. Brayden should have totally ended up with Adriana. They had much better chemistry with each other and they were amazing on the ice. The scenes of Adriana and Brayden building their relationship and learning to trust each other dominate the scenes with her and Freddie. Freddie had his time and Adriana left him, he needs to get over it.
Along with disagreeing with the ending, we think that Elsie is just a horrible person. She only cares about herself, totally takes advantage of her boyfriend Weston, played by Aidan Shaw, and hooks up with Freddie and Brayden. In the beginning of the show Elsie gets hurt and dislocates her shoulder, causing her to be out for the season. Even though she got hurt and couldn’t skate anymore, it’s not fair for her to be a mean person. She knew about Adriana and Freddie’s feelings and still chose to hook up with him. Along with that she blames everything on Adriana. We just don’t feel that Elsie is a good character and she had way too much screen time.
Even though some of the characters were questionable and didn’t deserve that much screen time, we think that “Finding Her Edge” is a must watch on Netflix. We definitely disagree with the ending, but hope that season two will end with Andriana and Brayden together. Season two is expected to release in early 2027 and it will be streaming on Netflix.
