Joy McDonald

This year, new assistant principal Joy McDonald has come back home to the school she herself attended. Previously, she spent two years working in the administration at Allegheny High School.
“They’re different schools, they both have really good points to them, and I have enjoyed working in service of Allegheny and Rockbridge,” said McDonald. “But it’s hard to compare because I was born and raised here, so Rockbridge has a little bit of a special place in my heart.”
After her high school graduation, McDonald attended Virginia Tech and received three college degrees.
“My undergraduate degree is in music education, my master’s degree is in curriculum and instruction with a focus on instructional technology, and my educational specialist degree is in school administration and policy studies,” said McDonald.
McDonald enjoys being a high school administrator, especially when it comes to the students she works with every day.
“I love being able to help others, and I love kids. I want to be around students and I love seeing students find their passion. I love seeing students become their own person,” said McDonald. “And what I love about high school is we get to have a focus on after high school, and your career. And I just find that fascinating.”
