Downtown Lexington has a variety of restaurants including two very popular Mexican Restaurants. Students at Rockbridge County high school have long debated which is better: Don Tequila or Muchacho Alegre. We decided to figure out the real winner.
We judged both of these restaurants based on 5 categories: Food, cleanliness, service, prices, and lastly the atmosphere of the restaurant.
Don Tequila is located on the south side of Lexington and is a fan favorite among Rockbridge students. Presley got the popular dish which is the Arroz Con Pollo. This dish is simple, consisting of just rice, chicken, and cheese. ACP is 14 dollars and is a huge portion, so you can get two to three meals out of it. This dish tasted very good and will definitely fill you up fast.
Abigail got three soft tacos, which consisted of beef, lettuce, and cheese. The tacos were 10 dollars and they held up really well. They also didn’t spill like normal tacos do. These three tacos are really delicious and definitely a great option if you’re not that hungry.
Don’s was very clean, the service was great and it took six minutes for our food to arrive. Our waiter was very attentive and constantly checked in to make sure we had everything we needed.
The atmosphere of the restaurant is very welcoming. With warm lighting in the evening, we felt very comfortable in the restaurant. Each set of tables and chairs has a different design, varying from waves in the ocean, to a beautiful sunset over a desert; making Don’s unique. Considering this, overall we would rate Don Tequila a solid nine out of ten.
Muchacho Alegre is located on North Lee Highway right after the East Lexington Bridge. Abigail got the three street tacos; they had onion, cilantro and lime juice on them. The tacos were $12.95 which was a bit more expensive than Don’s, but Muchacho Alegre’s tacos came with a side of rice and beans.
These tacos were delicious and way better than Don’s. They were more expensive, but they came with more food and salsa.
Presley got the Alegre rice, which has rice, chicken, cheese, and an assortment of vegetables mixed in. The Alegre rice was 13.99, but if you go during their lunch time (11:00-2:30), it’s priced at 8.99.
The dish was tasty, but compared to Dons, it was a little too salty and a much smaller portion size for a similar price.
The atmosphere of Muchacho Alegre was simple but colorful. The walls are decorated with colorful dishes, hats, and beautiful paintings. We had a new waiter who was just getting trained, which made the service a fun experience. We rate Muchacho a solid 7.5
Overall, we thought that Dons and Muchacho Alegre were both very good, but our opinions on the restaurants still remain different. Presley thought that Dons came out on top, while Abigail favored Muchacho.
