Fall is a season marked with shorter days, longer nights and holidays that bring families together. At this time most people enjoy relaxing at the end of the day by watching their favorite movie or show. While everyone’s Entertainment choices are different, how similar are they really? Does everyone go for a slapstick comedy or a tear jerking romance? A deep thought provoking documentary or an explosive action? The answer is both.
News Media, and Film Studies teacher Mary Holton was asked about how producers ensure that films bring in viewers from multiple genres.
“You have rom-coms, romance comedies, you have dramedies, which are drama comedies. I think sometimes it’s good for movies to kind of blend the two different genres so that it’s more accessible to audiences,” Holton said.
However, this genre blending isn’t limited solely to comedies. Other common examples include action-thrillers like “John Wick” and sci-fi horror such as “Alien” and “Quiet Place”. This appeal to multiple demographics using several genres makes for a rich story rather than a one dimensional mess with boring characters and dull predictable plot points.
Among the students and staff , preferences overlap constantly, but there is a clear favorite, comedy. Holton was interviewed on why she thinks that is the case.
“It’s the easiest to watch. You can turn your brain off and not have to really focus on too much and still have a good viewing experience,” Holton said.
This genre is vast and can be broken down further and further into subgenres; it includes films such as “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” “Mean Girls,” and “Elf”.
Whether you enjoy a riveting thriller or a kneeslapping comedy, you are guaranteed to find someone who enjoys the same thing. All the films mentioned can be found on Prime Video or Hulu.
