During February, the month is filled with love and romantic feelings surrounding Valentine’s Day. Some celebrate with friends at ‘Galentines’, some spend the time with their significant others, and some spend the holiday alone. Nonetheless, many enjoy watching rom-coms with the people they love.
We decided to choose ten popular rom-coms, and ranked our top three favorites from this list.
The rom-coms we chose from were “10 Things I Hate About You,” “The Princess Bride,” “How to Lose a Guy In 10 Days,” “Crazy Rich Asians,” “27 Dresses,” “l3 Going on 30,” “Anyone But You,” “Notting Hill,” “Love Actually,” and “When Harry Met Sally.”
In third place, we chose “Love Actually.” This film came out in 2003, and is a classic Christmas movie. Although this is a Christmas movie, it is still one of the best rom-coms. The story follows nine intertwined love stories. It features actors like Hugh Grant, Keira Knightley, Colin Firth, and Emma Thompson.
Coming in second is “How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days.” This film follows Andie Anderson, a magazine columnist, who must drive away a man for an article, and Benjamin Barry, who must win over a woman for a brand deal. The pair ends up together, and as they are trying to accomplish their goals for their careers, they both end up catching feelings. This movie balances lighthearted comedy and fun with deep emotions and feelings. Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey star in this film, along with Kathryn Hahn and Adam Goldberg.
Coming in as our personal favorite was “Crazy Rich Asians.” What started as a book by Kevin Kwan in 2013, was then made into a movie in 2018, directed by Jon M. Chu. The actors, including Constance Wu, Henry Golding, and Awkwafina were perfectly casted and fit the movie perfectly. These things proved “Crazy Rich Asians” to earn the title of number one. While only 4.8% of students chose this as their favorite rom-com, we still believe it is a great film.
Among students, “10 Things I Hate About You” was the clear favorite, with 47% of voters choosing it. This movie follows the story of two sisters, Kat and Bianca, who are not allowed to date. When Bianca wants to go on a date with someone, her dad creates the rule that Bianca is allowed to date when Kat dates someone. Patrick, a boy who wants a date with Bianca, creates a scheme in order to win over Bianca. This hilarious movie is based on Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew.”
Coming in second with 16.9% votes was the “Princess Bride.” This classic fantasy rom-com follows a farm boy, Westley, on a side quest to rescue his true love, Buttercup, from the evil prince. The movie is framed as a grandfather reading to his grandson as he is going to sleep.
In third place was “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” with 10.8% of voters, which reflects our personal votes.
Rom-coms are a great genre because they can be watched by anybody, and any type or mood. While we only ranked our top three favorites, we enjoy many rom-coms.
