The Wildcat cheer team lines up to support the football team as they run out onto the field.

The Wildcat football team debuted their new field against the Staunton Storm on Friday Sept. 1. After undergoing a transition to bermuda grass throughout the spring and summer, the new field at Verteran’s Stadium finally got some action.

Though the Cats were defeated by the Storm in a 0-42 shutout, there is still plenty of time left in the season.

The Rockbridge squad is undergoing a similar makeover as their field as they lost 16 members of their team in last years’ graduating class. Their athletes are learning to fill the roles of those who graduated, and are having to adjust quickly.

Senior fullback Daniel Grimm is one of these role-filling athletes.

“It was fun toting the rock,” said Grimm in reference to his new role in the Cats’ running game, “You can expect to see more of that in the future.”

Aside from Grimm, senior running back Ryan Maxwell showed promise in the Wildcat offense with some impressive carries that put the Wildcats within reach of scoring. Maxwell had 89 rushing yards on 17 carries.

The Wildcats are scheduled to play Alleghany next on Friday Sept. 8

at home. The game will start at 7:00 p.m. and will be broadcast live on the radio as well as NFHS Network.

Grace Fleshman
Grace Fleshman, Reporter
Grace Fleshman is a junior and a second-year reporter on this year’s Prowler staff. After learning a lot last year about journalism, she decided to become the news editor. She is ready and excited for this new role. This year she wants to focus on meeting new people, especially freshmen, and expanding her knowledge of newsworthy events at RCHS. In her free time, Fleshman enjoys dancing at the Rockbridge Ballet and hanging out with friends. She is a reporter on the Executive Council SCA, and enjoys attending meetings and planning events to boost school spirit. You can usually find Fleshman listening to music, particularly Taylor Swift, watching a TV show or movie for the 50th time, dancing whenever she is bored, or eating snacks. Fleshman looks forward to continuing writing for the Prowler for her last two high school years and to do well in her other studies through college.
