On Monday Oct. 20 the senior and junior girls battled it out during the Thompson Turf and the seniors took the win with 18 points. The Thompson Turf war is an annual powderpuff game which fundraises money for a scholarship in Ms. Thompson’s name. The planning for the game consisted of planning activities, half-time show, and what should be before the game. Junior Risa Penney shares what she did to plan for the event.
“Planning an event like this is a very tedious process because you have to communicate with community members to create a successful event. Planning involved us reaching out to RARO and the local newspaper and radio station to spread the word. Also we created posters to spread the word in elementary and middle schools,” Penney said.
Junior Anna Nye was a player in the game and shares what her favorite part was.
“I liked playing in the powderpuff game because I got to play a sport I have never played before. I like football but I never really watch it, so it was fun to learn more about a sport that is pretty popular. I also loved playing with my friends and competing against the seniors,” Nye said.
It was a community event which showed school involvement and allowed for everyone to try something different. Overall, the turf war was successful and raised about $12,000.
