Rockbridge County and the surrounding areas provide plenty of places to get outside and spend time in nature. From parks to trails, there is something for all levels of skill and desired views or experiences.
One of the most common hikes, which is more of a long walk, is the gazebo hike on Washington and Lee University. This is just under a mile walk through some lightly wooded area and a small field.
At the top, there is a nice overlook on the sunset with the Maury River right below you. For such a short and easy hike, there is a very rewarding view that is worth the while at the top. The semi flat fielded area makes throwing a football or frisbee the perfect activity to do.
Some common hikes that are more popular and a little more advanced are St. Marys Falls, Panther Falls, and Crabtree Falls. All of these hikes follow a creek or stream with some sort of waterfall at the top. If you are looking for a more scenic view in the woods with some water, these hikes are definitely a good option.
St.Marys and Crabtree are about a little more than a hour away from town, and Panther Falls is about 45 minutes up near the parkway. The drive to Panther Falls is pretty brutal, but if you take it slow, most cars will be fine.
They are a little bit longer and more difficult, but they have different views and waterfalls to explore at the top. This is an experience that you won’t find on your typical trail up to the top of a mountain, and I would recommend checking at least one of them out in the summer months,
Another hike that is a little bit more challenging is Cole Mountain, which is just as you get into Amherst County. This is a moderate 30 minute hike that will definitely make you sweat and get your heart rate up.
I have camped on top of Cole Mountain multiple times, and each time it has been a great experience. The sunset up there has been unreal, and the sky is illuminated pink everywhere you look. At night if no clouds are in the sky, it’s very peaceful to sit and stare up at the stars. I would recommend going up on Cole Mountain if you never have.
One thing to remember and look out for when camping anywhere is controlling your fire. Constantly tending and monitoring your pit will prevent a forest fire from starting and spreading. Being responsible makes things better for you, your campsite, the woods, and the animals that inhabit them.
For people that don’t want to voyage out on a lengthy hike, the Chessie Trail and Jordans Point are two places that you can go explore and walk around. Neither require much physical exertion, and they both offer beautiful views to take in and see.
The Chessie and Jordans Point both run with the Maury River, which makes them good places to bring a fishing rod and test your luck. If you are looking for a more laid back day, I definitely recommend these parks and trails.
If you live in the Rockbridge area and have not checked some of these out, I suggest you do so, because taking in the beauty of nature around here is something special in my opinion. The sunsets, weather, and views are something that bring lots of joy to me, and I believe could do the same for you.
